Acquisition of a Private Pilot Licence is appropriate for those who want to use an aeroplane for business or private travel.
Before their first solo flight, students must have reached 16 years of age and before applying for a PPL to be issued at the Civil Aviation Authority (ÚCL) students must have reached 17 years of age. They must have valid 1st or 2nd class flight fitness approval, which means they must successfully complete a medical examination undertaken at the Institute of Aviation Medicine (ÚLZ) in Prague. The course is comprised of aviation theory and 45 flying hours and is taken by a qualified powered flight instructor. The student completes some of the subjects before the practical training even begins, and the rest during training. Students can undertake the theory exam while their practical training is still underway. The exam is taken at ÚCL in Prague and is comprised of nine subjects. Each test must be completed with at least a 75% pass mark over a 12 month period. The practical part can be undertaken on successful completion of the theory examinations and involves flight piloting techniques and flight navigation.
This licence can be extended with, e.g. additional night visual flight rules - NVFR (certificate for night flights using visual references), instrument flight rules – IR (certificate for flights using instruments (IFR)) or a qualification for flights using multi-engined aeroplanes, MEP.
A PPL(A) is also appropriate for those who would like to become a professional pilot in the future.
